English comprehension at 13+ focuses on a pupil’s ability to read challenging texts closely and respond with insight and precision. Candidates are typically asked to analyse both prose and poetry, demonstrating clear understanding of content as well as deeper skills such as inference, interpretation and evaluation. Questions may test awareness of language choice, imagery, tone, structure and literary technique, alongside the ability to select and explain relevant evidence from the text. Strong answers are concise, well-organised and show an ability to move beyond surface meaning, engaging thoughtfully with how writers create effects and convey ideas under timed conditions.
-
Creative writing and composition tasks at 13+ assess how effectively a pupil can communicate ideas in their own writing. Candidates may be asked to produce fictional narratives or descriptive pieces, as well as non-fiction writing such as essays, letters, speeches or discursive responses. Examiners look for clear structure, purposeful paragraphing and a confident sense of audience, alongside imaginative ideas where appropriate.. High-quality responses demonstrate varied vocabulary, controlled sentence construction, accurate spelling and punctuation, generating effect and meaning through language and structure and the ability to develop ideas coherently within a limited time frame. Originality is valued, but always alongside clarity, accuracy and discipline in writing.

13+ mathematics papers at top independent schools test depth of understanding as well as problem-solving ability.Core topics generally include number and arithmetic, fractions and percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, measurement and basic statistics. Beyond routine calculations, pupils are expected to apply methods logically, reason clearly, and tackle multi-step problems that reward accuracy, resilience and mathematical thinking. Strong candidates demonstrate confidence in working independently, spotting patterns, and explaining or justifying their approach where required
-
Science assessments at 13+ typically cover all three disciplines — biology, chemistry and physics — with an emphasis on understanding rather than rote learning. Pupils may be tested on topics such as cells and human biology, basic chemical reactions and materials, energy, forces, electricity and simple physical processes. Questions often require candidates to apply scientific knowledge, interpret data, understand experiments, and use logical reasoning to reach conclusions. The strongest responses show clear thinking, accurate use of scientific terminology, and the ability to explain ideas coherently.

13+ scholarships at leading UK independent schools are broad, competitive, and deliberately designed to recognise excellence across multiple disciplines.
Schools frequently assess candidates in a wide range of subjects including mathematics, English, science, humanities, modern and classical languages, as well as creative and practical fields such as music, art, drama and design.
Assessment formats vary widely and may include written examinations, problem-solving papers, auditions, portfolios, practical trials, interviews, and general aptitude tests.
13+ scholarship assessments can cover one subject or several simultaneously, as such targeted preparation is crucial. Our tutors work flexibly with students in one specialist discipline or across multiple subjects, tailoring preparation to the exact scholarship pathway a school is offering. Whether a pupil is focusing on a single area of excellence — such as academic maths or music theory — or preparing for a broader combination of subjects, we design programmes that reflect the scope, depth, and style of elite 13+ scholarship assessments.
